Blog #5. Mini Art School: Cropping.
Design Basic Index: Cropping Exercise
Cropping is one skill that all designers ought to have in order to improve on their presentations. As said in design basic index by Kraus; "its up to the person to decide where and how the image will be placed in relation to its compositional elements"(p.189). At the end of the cropping activity, there is a link to boarder variation to blog #5. The final activity of echo color has a link at the end of second activity of boarder variation.
Above is a photo that shows college students on campus and my interest was get rid of the back ground building in order to show students relaxing on compound.

In the photo above is the place of Fine Arts in the Marinadistrict of San Francisco, california. My interest was to have a focus on the entrance and I cropped the rest. This brought a clearer view of the pillars and the entrance shape. I wanted to also bring closer the texture and color of the design which was clear with the original photo.
The above photo is the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps Project, a neighborhood effort to create a mosaic running up the risers of the 163 steps located at 16th and Moraga. San Francisco, California. I wanted the beauty pf the steps minus the surrounding green environment. The colors of the design of the steps creates a puzzle in ones mind, how it was it was made. I imagine the patience it takes to bring out such a design. Just hilarious.
Breathing Flower art by Choi Jeong Hwa, San Francisco, California. This flower's color and the background building colors match. The flower is what I was more interested in putting in focus with little back ground building when I cropped as shown in the photo below

I like the the photo on the left and the skill exhibited by the biker. I particularly wanted the biker in space only and that what I got when I cropped. However as seen in the cropped image, a lot of caution should be taken to have an image that is not blurred. Blurred images do not bring out a good design.
The focus in the photo was the skill the soccer player was showing in kicking the ball. I wanted to bring out the angle at which he was and this is good for balance and stability while hitting the ball. I cropped out the rest and remained with the ball and the leg.
The link below leads to a second activity of Boarder variation for blog #5

The horizon is quite high for the first "Tiled Steps" image, thus showing off its dominance. I really liked how you cropped it, and created an entire new image just by doing so. A viewer, such as myself, cannot tell whether the second image was that of an indoor or outdoor staircase.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it is best to save and use images in TIF format rather than JPG format for cropping purposes, since TIF provides a better quality image for close-ups. You are less likely to get a blurry looking image.
Thanks Danny for the feedback. I much appreciate your observation and guidance on TIF versus JPG. Its something I had not been careful to observe.
